On Friday morning, I was feeling a bit under the weather with either a stomach flu or a virus. Regardless of how I felt, we ended up performing at Franklin Elementary School in Burlingame. By the time I woke up Saturday morning I felt horrible. This next day was scheduled with 5 shows in the day all around the Bay Area! It's days like these I wish I had a regular desk job where I could just call in sick. The first event was a week long library reading festival, that was heavily publicized with our names. The second and third gigs were for the Oracle Corporation, a repeat customer who's use us over 5 times in the past and the last one I did was a birthday party a short distance away. We performed 4 out of 5 shows that day and ended up passing off the last event to another great entertainer. In the last ten years of professional performing I've only had to cancel or find a replacement 3 times out of two thousand plus performances. My stomach is feeling better today and luckily we only have 3 performances today!
This year I competed in several magic competitions. The preparations were time consuming and much thought was placed in the routines that I performed. Though it was difficult, all the hard work finally paid off. The overall winner was announced tonight at the final Banquet and Awards ceremony. Not only did I win the People's Choice Award in both the Close-Up and Stage competitions, but I was also awarded Stage & Parlor Magician of the Year and overall Magician of the Year for San Jose! Many thanks to my beautiful wife Katie for her watchful eye and critique. While I'm enjoying this victory, I'm looking forward to competing in other competitions around the Bay Area this coming year.
Last Tuesday, I received an email from the segment producer from Bay Area Backroads saying that she was sorry she missed my performance at Kron 4's holiday party. She only found out after the party, that I performed at both this and last year's holiday party. With the baby James arriving on that day, coupled with having to stay at the hospital the next few days, I didn't get a chance to follow up. But I followed up today via e-mail and guess what? We're filming tomorrow in SF. We'll just have to see if any of the effects will make the final cut.
On another note, I received my first wrapped gift from repeat clients, Keith, Nancy and Bruce. I've gotten lots of swag, free food, and other cool stuff in the past. Most of the free gifts I get are usually given to everyone at the party, but never anything for just the entertainer. It really made me feel special. I guess, I really made Bruce feel special on his 7th birthday, so he wanted more for his 9th. Keith, the father, was really happy and surprised to see me considering the baby just arrived last week. Now James has a new red baby hooded sweater. The other nice thing about the party was riding an ultra cool elevator to the fourth floor in the house. I really hate when I have to carry my heavy prop case up a flight of stairs.
Update... I did a gig for a group call Newhaven on the 15th. It was a fun gig, especially since I won a lasagna pan, and a microwave oven in the raffle. We've been using a 20 year old hand-me down from my cousin for the last half year that Katie's been complaining about. Now we can get rid of that old clunker.
Postscript I've been told by the editor the feature will air on March 1st and 2nd on Bay Area Backroads. A couple of the shots they filmed of me made it into the introduction of the piece.
A while ago I got an email from Jeff Raz the director of the clown conservatory and current clown touring with the Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo".

Today I competed in San Jose's Ring 216's close-up magic competition. Among the competitors were some of the best magicians in the Bay Area. I started off the routine by changing five one dollar bills into five one hundred dollar bills, followed by my X-files mentalism routine, the classic shell game, and finishing off with a ace routine choreographed perfectly to music. To keep it a "close-up" competition and more intimate, the competitors had to perform their routines twice. We performed in two separate rooms for two different audiences. The competition was tough and I won the people's choice award by one point. We'll find out at the next meeting who wins the over all competition. Stay tuned...
On July 6th, Kat and I performed two shows, for audiences totaling over 400 people, at the Redding Public library. A few weeks later when get a flattering thank you letter from the Head of Youth Services. Enclosed in that letter was a full-color newspaper clipping (4"x7") of Kat and Ira Morgan performing the linking rings. Here's the web link.
I've been working really hard the last week making an new demo DVD. I also have full length performances on youtube.com. The purpose of this is to get us working on a cruise ship. If you know of any entertainment producers or cruise ship booker feel free to send me their information or send them this link.
