On November 18th, I'll be taping another television show. After seeing some of my magic, a television producer and friend connected me with someone who host their own television show. When I find out when it airs, I'll be sure to update this post. After seeing some of my magic Marc Potter said, "your magic is light years ahead of other magicians, and you're the Anthony Robbins of magic."
Last weekend I performed at Parker's birthday party in Lafayette CA. As I parked the car, a train approached me and sounded it's horn. The kids where about to disembark from their train ride. How awesome is that to have a train ride at your birthday party, hot dogs catered by Top Dog and a show by Dan Chan the Magic Man. Next year we'll have to have Kat the Acrobat in the show too.
Holiday shows are starting to ramp up and this weekend I performed at the Woodside Fire District, fire station. Happy Birthday Mick!
Next up are gigs are for KRON 4, Stonestown Galleria, Burlingame Fire Department, Olympic Club, Francisca Club, Hitachi, the residence of the French Counsel, Bo Magnussen (of Magnussen Lexus), and even one event on a boat cruise.
Update: Today my nephew Jeremy and I performed at KRON 4's holiday party. It was cool seeing local celebrities like Darya Folsom of the morning news, Stanley Roberts of People Behaving Badly, and Santa aka Henry of Henry's Garden.
I enjoy my work. So much so, I don't want to retire. Most of my friends and family are saying, "Yeah, right". But I know a man who has done it and he's living legend known to magicians. A contemporary with Houdini who is still plying his trade. John Calvert was born in 1911. The true Renaissance man John has done it all. He has traveled all around the world piloting his own planes and boats. In fact he has traveled across the Atlantic in eleven days. He and his wife Tammy were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after they rode out hurricane Wilma on their 67 foot boat in Florida. John is still lecturing and performing his magic all around the US.

Today I competed in San Jose's Ring 216's close-up magic competition. Among the competitors were some of the best magicians in the Bay Area. I started off the routine by changing five one dollar bills into five one hundred dollar bills, followed by my X-files mentalism routine, the classic shell game, and finishing off with a ace routine choreographed perfectly to music. To keep it a "close-up" competition and more intimate, the competitors had to perform their routines twice. We performed in two separate rooms for two different audiences. The competition was tough and I won the people's choice award by one point. We'll find out at the next meeting who wins the over all competition. Stay tuned...
I've been working really hard the last week making an new demo DVD. I also have full length performances on youtube.com. The purpose of this is to get us working on a cruise ship. If you know of any entertainment producers or cruise ship booker feel free to send me their information or send them this link.
In July 2006 I had the opportunity to travel to Japan with my wife. We both love everything Japanese even though we're both Chinese. This was my fourth trip to Japan for performances for Marines. We especially enjoyed the great food and scenery. You might be wondering why there are pictures of fruit below. The fruit in Japan are all perfectly shaped and beautiful. You've never seen more beautiful fruit, but with perfection there comes a price. If you click on the picture you'll notice it cost about 4-5 US dollars per apple. You're also probably wondering why we took pictures of the soft serve ice cream, the sign says "natural Viagra". I didn't bother trying it and opted for the wasabi ice cream instead. As for the green deck of normal playing cards, they are sold only to military personnel on military bases. I was going to buy all of them but my wife only let me take a box of 144 home with me. Many magicians pay top dollar for these rare playing cards on ebay.
As a magician people ask me if I ever desire to be the next David Copperfield, David Blaine or Criss Angel. To me, trying to become the next so and so would be attempting to imitate. Also as an icon, I would be limited to only performing certain things "in character". I probably wouldn't be able to do any handstand push-ups with the yo-yo spinning from my mouth or most of my more complicated card tricks. At this point in my career, I'd like to keep it a variety show.
One of the goals I set early on was to perform in the mecca of magic; not Las Vegas, but the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood. On September 18th, 2006, I fulfilled a life long dream.
I didn't really know what to expect and was a little nervous even after having over a 1000 performances under my belt. Upon arriving I was pleasantly surprised with what I found on the door: a welcoming "Hollywood Star" with my name on it. I felt like I was a star!
During the course of the week Kat and I would perform 21 shows. (She didn't get her name on a door unfortunately...that is until she's promoted from assistant to partner that is!) We performed the manipulation act, paper balls routine, and also our rope escape. My next goal is to create a routine for both the close-up room and also the parlor. If you have hired Dan or Kat in the past and will be in the Hollywood area. Feel free to request a guest pass to the magic castle and e-mail me at danielgchan (at) yahoo.com with your email address and full name and I'll have a guest pass sent to you.
