This year I competed in several magic competitions. The preparations were time consuming and much thought was placed in the routines that I performed. Though it was difficult, all the hard work finally paid off. The overall winner was announced tonight at the final Banquet and Awards ceremony. Not only did I win the People's Choice Award in both the Close-Up and Stage competitions, but I was also awarded Stage & Parlor Magician of the Year and overall Magician of the Year for San Jose! Many thanks to my beautiful wife Katie for her watchful eye and critique. While I'm enjoying this victory, I'm looking forward to competing in other competitions around the Bay Area this coming year.
A while ago I got an email from Jeff Raz the director of the clown conservatory and current clown touring with the Cirque du Soleil's "Corteo".
"ABC7 and Cirque Du Soleil are running a contest and looking for entries...
Entrants can win a day behind the scenes at Cirque Du Soleil, meet the cast & directors, and spend the day with the Cirque family.
We are looking for people to show off their talents, whether it is dancing, singing, juggling, acrobatics, anything goes!
Just submit a 1 minute or less video to ABC7 (details attached)
The videos will be sent to a casting director with Cirque and they will pick the top 5 videos. Those five videos will then be placed on abc7news.com and the public will vote for their favorite."
WINNER: Winners will receive a day long experience with Cirque du Soleil during one (1) Bay Area performance of KOOZA. Prize also includes two (2) Tapis Rouge tickets to see one (1) Bay Area performance of KOOZA. ARV of prize: $599.00 US

I've been working really hard the last week making an new demo DVD. I also have full length performances on youtube.com. The purpose of this is to get us working on a cruise ship. If you know of any entertainment producers or cruise ship booker feel free to send me their information or send them this link.
As a magician people ask me if I ever desire to be the next David Copperfield, David Blaine or Criss Angel. To me, trying to become the next so and so would be attempting to imitate. Also as an icon, I would be limited to only performing certain things "in character". I probably would eliminate the bian lian, handstand push-ups with the yo-yo spinning from my mouth or most of my more complicated card tricks. At this point in my career, I'd like to keep it a variety show.
One of the goals I set early on was to perform in the mecca of magic; not Las Vegas, but the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood. On September 18th, 2006, I fulfilled a life long dream.
I didn't really know what to expect and was a little nervous even after having over a 1000 performances under my belt. Upon arriving I was pleasantly surprised with what I found on the door: a welcoming "Hollywood Star" with my name on it. I felt like I was a star!
During the course of the week Kat and I would perform 21 shows. (She didn't get her name on a door unfortunately...that is until she's promoted from assistant to partner that is!) We performed the manipulation act, paper balls routine, and also our rope escape. My next goal is to create a routine for both the close-up room and also the parlor. If you have hired Dan or Kat in the past and will be in the Hollywood area. Feel free to request a guest pass to the magic castle and e-mail me at danielgchan (at) yahoo.com with your email address and full name and I'll have a guest pass sent to you.
